Lithuanian Level 2 Lower Intermediate

Course description: Level 2 is for learners who have successfully completed Level 1 or who have some knowledge of the language acquired through regular visits to Lithuania or self-study. The course runs over three ten week terms and each session is two hours long. It focuses on all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The aim of the course is to consolidate the skills acquired at Level 1 and to build on them further. On completion of the course students should be able to communicate in, and understand, Lithuanian in a variety of practical everyday situations. The course covers the following areas:

Topics: houses, flats and furniture; weather and climate; clothes; human body; medical conditions; daily routine; leisure activities and hobbies; nature and countryside; holidays and celebrations. Cultural references: national and religious celebrations, Lithuanian legends.

Functions: renting and buying a house; describing the weather; describing the human body and people鈥檚 appearance; describing medical symptoms; talking about hobbies; planning leisure activities; making bookings and reservations; asking for help and clarification; giving orders; making polite and indirect requests; expressing one鈥檚 opinion; reading and understanding simple stories; writing informal letters.

Grammar: comparative and superlative degree of adjectives; subordination with adjective clauses; adjective and noun declensions; subjunctive mood; sentence conjunctions; diminutives; reflexive verbs; the frequentative past tense; genetive of purpose; verb forms with 鈥搃n臈ti; -ioti.
