The ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) inspires innovation and evidence-based practice focused on improving disaster risk reduction (DRR) through our research, education, and partnerships. This creates a better life for many people by reducing the negative impacts of disasters. The IRDR is an exciting cross-×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ department, which leads research, knowledge exchange and teaching in the fields of risk and disaster reduction and humanitarian action. It produces world-leading research in disaster risk reduction through a multidisciplinary perspective for the long-term benefit of humanity. The IRDR provides a focus for ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳’s disaster risk reduction activities through its promotion of novel multidisciplinary research and translation into practice, and aims to assume a role of leadership both in the UK and internationally. The IRDR is an academic department in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, but works across all ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳’s faculties, and contributes to ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳’s Grand Challenges.

About the role

The main purpose of this post is to provide teaching in the area of disaster risk reduction and humanitarian studies, particularly relating to research methods. The postholder will lead tutorials, assess student work, give selected seminars, workshops, and assistance during class exercises, supervise projects, and support teaching-related administration and recruitment activities.

There are two full-time, fixed-term roles available with different contract lengths:

Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Risk, Disasters and Humanitarianism (FTC until 31/10/2023)
Closing date: 12^th January 2023

Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Risk, Disasters and Humanitarianism (FTC until 30/04/2025)
Closing date: 12^th January 2023

About you

A PhD in a subject relevant to disaster risk reduction, or extensive experience commensurate with a PhD. Applications from PhD students who have submitted their thesis but awaiting their VIVA, or who are due to submit soon, can be considered. They should have teaching experience and the ability to deliver public presentations, as well as the ability to write clearly for a range of audiences. They should be committed to high quality teaching, in particular in relation to assessing and providing feedback for student work, and fostering a positive learning environment for students. The appointment will be made at Associate Lecturer – Teaching (Grade 7) level. The post would be suitable as a first university teaching appointment.
