The overarching aim of this module is to develop a better understanding of how to support children and young people who experience social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. We come to this with a particular focus on the role of language and communication. Language and communication are key factors underpinning both typical and atypical development. We will consider theories of typical development in terms of social and emotional skills, before moving on to consider research on atypical development in the social, emotional and behavioural domains, and in language and communication. You will critique existing interventions aimed at supporting children in this area and consider the application of research and theory to individual/school practice. The student provides the opportunity to discuss how ideas might work on the ground and apply to real life individual children in challenging circumstances and varying contexts.
