Description
Summary
This module will equip you with an overview of a range of research methods and techniques that can and are being utilised in humanitarian contexts to generate robust data and evidence to help planning, policy and programme implementation.
You will critically analyse conflicting information and interpret data in difficult circumstances and this demands a range of quantitative and qualitative skills. You will be taught to analyse study designs to understand their implications and limitations and to help you assess practical application of the findings.
You will be introduced to a range of tools that help humanitarians respond, including rapid needs assessments, surveys, and prioritisation evaluation methods (e.g., realist evaluation methods etc). You will learn about statistical approaches, principles of data science; qualitative research methods and technologies, including participant-led research.
You will also learn about trade-offs between long-term research versus rapid approaches, and the ethics and role of research in humanitarian settings.
The method of delivery
The module will primarily be delivered through subject-specific lectures, with expert guest lecturers for specific methods, followed by seminars which will focus on practical application of skills taught. Students will be expected to have undertaken the required reading and actively contribute to class discussions and work groups.
