Description
The aim of the dissertation is to enable students to undertake original research in any aspect of urban studies by applying and extending the critical thinking developed in taught modules. A range of topics and research methods is therefore considered appropriate. The dissertation offers students an opportunity to learn how to construct a piece of research from scratch, synthesising existing literature and their own research into a coherent exploration of a specific issue. In doing so, students have to choose between less-than-ideal alternatives in the practicalities of investigating their chosen topic. The project therefore fosters the ability to work independently and see a complex project through from start to finish.
