Description

This module is one of three rotating Life Cycle modules taken in year 5 and comprising core teaching and clinical placements. During this particular module you will spend most of your time learning about Child Health and General Practice and, in addition, cover related aspects of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH). As with all modules, there will be Clinical and Professional Practice (CPP) related teaching (see separate CPP guide on Moodle for details). This module builds upon your learning in year 4, applying this to the community setting, and to child health.Ìý

The overall aims of the module are:Ìý

  • to develop your clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills in relation to the core presentations linked to this module;
  • to understand how the core conditions covered by this module present;Ìý
  • to be able to take a full history, including collateral and social history, and in particular to learn how to communicate with children and their parents;
  • to conduct a clinical examination from a patient with any of these core conditions and presentations; and in particular to learn how to examine children, and how to assess their development;
  • to learn the knowledge, clinical skills and attitudes needed to manage children and their families as patients in hospital and community settings;Ìý
  • to gain experience and understanding of the care of individuals and families in primary care and awareness of the holistic nature, scope and limitations of the discipline of general practice;Ìý
  • to understand the principles of child and family mental health and the relationship between physical, psychological and social factors in health and illness; Ìý
  • to experience working with multidisciplinary teams in child and family health care;Ìý
  • to have the opportunity to integrate knowledge of basic sciences and pathology with clinical practice;Ìý
  • to have the opportunity to continue learning related to elements of Clinical and Professional Practice.
