Content: This module aims to provide you with a firm grounding in the basics of clinical theory and practice, from diagnosis to treatment, as well as an understanding of the approaches and methods in individual and population-level health psychology. Each lecture is taught by an expert in the respective field.

The first half of the module aims to introduce the discipline of clinical psychology by outlining its approach to understanding, treating and preventing psychological distress and disorder. This part of the module gives an overview of the major theories of the aetiology of psychological and psychiatric disorders, their clinical assessment, and their treatment.

The second part of this module addresses the biological, psychological, social/environmental and behavioural processes involved in health, illness and healthcare.

Teaching delivery: This module is taught via 20 hours of in-person lectures over 10 teaching weeks.

Module Aims:

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY SECTION 1:

- To introduce some of the major topics in clinical psychology

- To consider psychological, social and biological influences on causes of mental disorders

- To outline some of the main treatment approaches.

HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY SECTION 2:

- To study scientifically the psychological and behavioural processes of health, illness and health care.

- Specifically, to apply psychology to understand and change health behaviours in order to supportÌýÌý

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý a) the promotion and maintenance of health

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý b) the prevention of illness and disability

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý c) the enhancement of outcomes of those who are ill or living with a disability

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý d) the improvement of the health care system and health policy formation
