Description
The major unit operations are discussed with respect to fundamental principles of operation, typical equipment (emphasising equipment that can be used at production scale), basic quantitative design equations, and overall design considerations including throughput, cost, and robustness. Examples of such unit operations include:
- Filtration: membrane-based filters (run in dead-end and cross-flow modes), depth filters.
- Centrifugation: disc-stack centrifuges, tubular bowl centrifuges.
- Cell disruption: focused on scalable techniques, including homogenisation and bead mills.
- Liquid-liquid extraction: cross-flow and countercurrent-flow cascades.
- Chromatography: affinity chromatography.
A brief introduction to process integration completes the course, including compatibility of various unit operations, and fundamental trade-offs (such as yield-purity and purity-cost).
