Description

‘Demographic Analysis’ is a module which aims to introduce you to theory, concepts and data in demography, to enable you to undertake basic demographic analysis, and to make you develop written and interpretative skills of data analysis. Set within the framework of the basic demographic equation (population change = births – deaths +/- net migration) the course unpacks the demographer’s tool kit. You will cover the derivation, use and interpretation of key measures used in the study of population structure and the components of population change (fertility, mortality and migration) concluding with a look at population projection. You will also cover how the study of demographic pattern and processes relates to many of the great social policy challenges of the 21st Century.

By the end of the module, you should be able to:

  1. Explain how demographic pattern and process influence our understanding of changing populations and of related social issues
  2. Interpret key theory and principles underlying demographic analysis
  3. Calculate and interpret a range of measures for demographic analysis
  4. Access and use appropriate data sources for demographic analysis
  5. Select and use data sources and demographic method intelligently in a range of real-world applications.

This is an intermediate module open to Year 2 students on the BSc Population Health Sciences programme. There is availability for ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ elective students from other departments. However, spaces are limited and are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis on Portico.

There will be weekly lectures and seminars in order to gain hands-on experience of demographic methods using data from the UK and globally.
