In this module we will critically examine the contested nature and form of education in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa. We will reflect on and discuss questions such as: Can education in SSA (sub-Saharan Africa) be decolonized? If so, how and on whose terms? If not, what are the main social, political and structural challenges? Why do African scholars critique the importation of global education norms, practices, and pedagogies to the SSA context? Is there a real learning crisis in SSA? Why is there such a high increase of low-fee private schools across the content? Are low-fee private schools socially more just in the SSA context? How can we ensure gender equity and not just equality in education in SSA countries? What can we learn from African feminist thought? By drawing predominantly on African scholarship and thought, we will cover a wide range of topics and themes concerning major issues in education and SSA.Ìý
