The module begins by providing students with a grounding in the role of theory in social research. This includes discussion of models of theory development, the relationship between theory and data, critical approaches to theory. Following this, students will develop advanced knowledge in two areas of research. The areas students will be able to choose from will include discourse analysis, narrative research, ethnography, critical enquiry, online research, advanced quantitative analysis, advanced mixed-methods research, and video analysis. Theory will be a prominent aspect of how these areas are engaged with.
