AFRAB delegates at conference in honour of Professor Ibrahima Thioub, Dakar, July 2023

Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) of Dakar, Senegal, organised a major conference to celebrate the lifetime achievements and contributions of Professor Ibrahima Thioub, Senegalese historian, retired professor of history at UCAD, and former President (Recteur) of the Université Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar (2014-2020). Professor Thioub played a major role in the institutionalization of research on slavery, the slave trades, and abolition in the African continent. He was the founder of a Regional Pole of Excellence for research on slavery and of CARTE, the African Centre for Research on the Slave Trade and Slavery and he authored some seminal articles that inspired many researchers working on these topics. AFRAB supported the participation of the researchers coordinating the Niger and Cameroon AFRAB teams, who presented their work on abolitionism in their respective regions of research focus.

A collective Special Issue on ‘African Abolitions and Approaches to Ending Slavery’ containing contributions by researchers working in the AFRAB Project will be published as Volume 10 of the journal Slaveries & Post-Slaveries / Esclavages & Post-Esclavages in November 2024. This Special Issue, based on AFRAB research, will be dedicated to Professor Ibrahima Thioub. It includes articles by Cheikh Sene, Yonas Ashine, Michael Odijie & Emmanuel Saboro, Samuel Nyanchoga & Michelle Liebst, Oumarou Moussa, and Benedetta Rossi. The cover features an award-winning painting of Nigerien artist Boubacar Djibo.
