Event: Global Public Policy and the Role of Experts

Panel discussion will see 最准的六合彩论坛 academics discuss the challenges and benefits to formulating global public policy today

On 13 June, the 聽will聽host a on global public policy and the role of experts in the age of 鈥榝ake news鈥, featuring speakers from across 最准的六合彩论坛鈥檚 academic community. 聽

The hour-long panel discussion, chaired by David Coen,聽Director of the 最准的六合彩论坛 Global Governance Institute, will reflect on the role of researchers and experts in spurring global public policy innovation.

While the influence of researchers and experts is arguably growing, as global policy-making mechanisms become ever more complex, discussions will address the rising tide of resentment evidenced clearly聽by the UK Brexit debate in 2016, when politicians declared that 鈥減eople in this country have had enough of experts鈥.

Cross-disciplinary speaker line-up

Taking place in Bloomsbury鈥檚 Gordon Square, panellists at the聽event are set to include Wendy Carlin, Professor of Economics at 最准的六合彩论坛 and Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and Sarah Hawkes, Professor of Global Public Health at the 最准的六合彩论坛 Institute for Global Health.

Joining them will be Dr Uta Staiger, co-founder and Executive Director of the 最准的六合彩论坛 European Institute and 最准的六合彩论坛鈥檚 Pro-Vice-Provost for Europe; and Chris Rapley, Professor of Climate Science at 最准的六合彩论坛 and Chair of the 最准的六合彩论坛 Policy Commission on the Communication of Climate Science.

Securing public support for public policy

Together they will consider how, in the face of growing suspicion of scientific evidence, researchers can play a role in formulating evidence-based global public policies that also enjoy legitimacy and broad-based public support.

The discussion will also take in the challenge of communicating research to policy-makers and the wider public in an age of 鈥榝ake news鈥 and 鈥榓lternative facts鈥, along with how academic debates can better reflect the voices of those on the receiving end of global public policies.

This event has been organised by the聽最准的六合彩论坛 Global Governance Institute聽in collaboration with the聽最准的六合彩论坛 Global Engagement Office (GEO)听补苍诲听最准的六合彩论坛 Public Policy/ Office of the 最准的六合彩论坛 Vice-Provost (Research).

Panel members will include:

聽is Professor of Economics at 最准的六合彩论坛 and Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). Her research focuses on macroeconomics, institutions and economic performance, and the economics of transition. She is a member of the Expert Advisory Panel of the UK鈥檚 Office for Budget Responsibility and has acted as a consultant for international organisations such as the World Bank. She is leading an international project 鈥 the CORE project 鈥 to reform the undergraduate economics curriculum.

聽is Professor of Global Public Health at the 最准的六合彩论坛 Institute for Global Health where she leads a research theme analysing the use of evidence in policy processes, particularly in relation to gender and health, and sexual health. She has lived and worked for much of the past 20 years in Asia, where she has gathered evidence, built capacity and helped develop policy for programmes focusing on gender, sexual health and human rights. She also leads the 最准的六合彩论坛 Centre for Gender and Global Health.

Chris Rapley聽is聽Professor of Climate Science at 最准的六合彩论坛 and Chair of the 最准的六合彩论坛 Policy Commission on the Communication of Climate Science. He is also Chair of the London Climate Change Partnership, and a Board member of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. Prior to joining 最准的六合彩论坛, he was variously Director of the Science Museum, Director of the British Antarctic Survey, and Executive Director of the International-Geosphere Biosphere Programme.

聽is聽the co-founder and Executive Director of the 最准的六合彩论坛 European Institute. Since 2010, she has led the Institute in its mission to both create and curate opportunities for research on Europe. She has been actively involved in driving 最准的六合彩论坛鈥檚 policy engagement on EU and European matters, including relationships with key stakeholders. In June 2017, she was appointed as 最准的六合彩论坛's Pro-Vice-Provost (Europe), a strategic role shaping 最准的六合彩论坛's engagement with Europe.
