The Climate Ambassadors project is a DfE-funded programme which aims to support education settings as they develop and implement Climate Action Plans. It will see 9 regional hubs established across England, including one at ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳.

The London hub

The ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Climate Action Unit was chosen as a regional hub for its experience enabling people to take climate action in different areas of society across the London area. In addition, much of the framework for our regional hub strategy stems from our work building the programme, which delivers training and ongoing support to teachers to build and implement climate action plans in partnership with Luton borough council.

There is already a huge diversity of stakeholders supporting education settings to take climate action in London. Through the Climate Ambassador project, the ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Climate Action Unit is committed to supporting, aligning and collaborating with Local Authorities, NGOs, community organisations and sustainability networks to ensure that settings receive the best support available to them.

What will each hub do?

Each regional hub will engage education settings in the programme across all ages, including nurseries and Early Years settings, primary and secondary schools, FE colleges and universities. The hubs will also recruit and support volunteer Climate Ambassadors as they assist education settings in developing and implementing Climate Action Plans.

These two strands of work will ensure that ground-level support is properly targeted to those settings that need it most.

Climate Action Plans will include action across four main areas: decarbonisation and energy efficiency; climate adaptation and resilience; biodiversity and green infrastructure; climate education and green skills and careers.

Origins of the Climate Ambasadors network

Climate Ambassadors are explicitly referenced in the In December 2023, the University of Reading and EAUC, alongside various partners, were successful in bidding for a DfE contract to facilitate regional networks of support and advice for sustainability and climate action planning in the education system.
