Donation by the Under 17 Car Club to Intelligent Mobility at ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ for research on young drivers

22 February 2023

The Under 17 Car Club donates a trailer to Intelligent Mobility at ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳, supporting the ongoing partnership by enabling the ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ team to attend Pathfinder activities that are organised throughout the Midlands and Yorkshire.

Intelligent Mobility at ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳, in collaboration with the Under 17 Car Club, explore how young drivers manage high-risk driving scenarios. This joint research and educational project started in 2022 with the support of a summer internship by ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Engineering. The ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ team created Virtual Reality scenarios, which were integrated into the mobile simulator of the Intelligent Mobility lab. The simulator was then invited to Pathfinder events, structured and practical pre-licence novice driver development training sessions, to collect and analyse data (from eye tracking and input devices) from young drivers including the simulated impairment effects through beer and drug goggles. Over 50 participants have already taken part in the research study.ÌýÌý

The Under 17 Car Club has now donated a trailer to Intelligent Mobility at ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳. The trailer will support the ongoing collaboration as it will allow the ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ team to visit Pathfinder events, which are organised in various locations in the Midlands, and Yorkshire.ÌýÌý

Intelligent Mobility at ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ is a full-size driving simulator including behavioural and physiological sensing systems emerged from EPSRC ECR equipment funding with support from the Department of Transport, Ansible Motion and ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ PEARL. This cross-faculty initiative provides an excellent environment for research and industrial collaboration as well as public engagement and outreach activities. A number of research collaborations have been recognised internationally through prestigious awards.ÌýÌý
