Bloomsbury Theatre

Annual Greek and Latin Classics play

Since 1987, the Department of Greek & Latin at ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ has teamed up with the Bloomsbury Theatre to stage a student production of a Greek or Latin play every year (a comedy, a tragedy, or an epic).

This is now one of the most famous and long-running commitments to the modern production of ancient Greek and Latin drama in the world. It usuallyÌýattracts large audiences, many of whom are school students studying English, or Drama, or Classical Civilisation, and university students from various departments.

“One ofÌýthe most exciting moments of the students' careers at ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳: not only do they get to perform and direct in a professional theatre like the Bloomsbury, butÌýthey also hugely benefit from the experienced team of theatre professionals that the Bloomsbury offers.ÌýSome students have used this as a first step into a career in theatre, whether as an actor, director, or producer.

Slade School Showcase

Biannual event since 2008

Students from across the Slade School of Fine Art, from all years and courses, are invited to take part in Platform 1, a performance programme at the Bloomsbury Theatre, repeated over two evenings. The students are given free rein but are encouraged to relate their proposal to their work in the studio and to see it as an extension of their developing art practice. They negotiate the space, assisted by a dedicated professional technical team. The short solo and group pieces demonstrate a great diversity of attitudes and approaches to performance within a fine art context. The relationship between theatre and art is complex, contentious, and often antagonistic, but this event offers an opportunity to experience working on a stage and enjoying the rich resources of the Bloomsbury Theatre. The students assist and support each other, while working together collaboratively on the event as a whole.

Creative Documentary by Practice MFA

April 2022

The MFA offers students the opportunity to develop non-fiction filmmaking as a creative research practice – making films which interrogate and explore the contemporary world. Drawing on broad based anthropological thought about the social and cultural world, we produce filmmakers who are imaginative, risk-takingÌýand pushÌýboundaries in the field.

“The Departmental Usage scheme gave students the unique opportunity to work with industry professionals on a real film set. Prior to this our course had been restricted to working in seminar rooms and lecture theatres - which aren't great spaces for filming! Working in the Bloomsbury Theatre gave us the option of a controlled environment in which students could work with professional lighting and camera equipment in a live environment with experienced technical theatre staff. Hiring a blackout studio can be phenomenally expensive, so to have the Theatre available for free and located on campus is a real privilege.

×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Slade 150

In 2021-22, the Slade celebrated 150 years of fine art teaching and research with a varied programme of events that reflect on the past, showcase the present, and look ahead to the future.

“×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Slade school of Art held a wonderful film premiere at the Bloomsbury theatre to celebrate 150 years of the Slade, this was only made possible by the ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Departmental Usage scheme. ÌýIt gave the Slade an unique opportunity to showcase the amazing film and promote our work to a wider audience outside of a classroom setting. ÌýWithout this space we wouldn’t have had the engagement, celebration and involvement of the wider community. ÌýWe needed a venue that was able to showcase our work to dignitaries, experts, students, and public all in the same space. ÌýIt was a unique and special occasion, only made possible by having this venue available to us

“In its most jam-packed, ambitious programme to-date, audience members were dazzled by an array of music, theatre, magic and more. Featuring every echelon from the department – the stage being shared by staff and student alike – the evening was a true celebration of all of the creative talents within Physics and Astronomy. June 2023

×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Division of Psychiatry presentedÌýMusic, Meaning and Memory – an evening of South Asian music and dance. The evening included Aga Khan Music Award Winner, Soumik Datta sharing new work inspired by ×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳ Dr Naaheed Mukadam’s research. Titled ‘Mone Rekho’ which means remember in Bengali, Soumik’s sarod captures the sound of dementia through raga collages that pulse with electronica, tabla and speech. It also included Akademi, a UK South Asian dance company founded in 1979 and funded by Arts Council England, a dynamic and future facing organisation, with a vision that these dance forms can thrive at the centre of British culture. Akademi Dance Artist Jesal Patel delivered a series of participatory workshops, exploring South Asian dance, music and movement, for the residents of two London care homes. Jesal’s response to the impact of these workshops on participants will be performed in the second half as an exploratory dance piece in development.

“I wanted to widen the reach of my work, so that it was not just for academics and clinicians but also connecting with the general public.

±«°ä³¢ÌýCollaborative Social Science

October 2022

×î×¼µÄÁùºÏ²ÊÂÛ̳’s Collaborative Social Science Domain organised a half day Sensory Ethnography Workshop and evening of Film Screenings. Sensory Ethnographers set out to understand the role of senses in contemporary culture through research practices that engage with the senses and the Bloomsbury Studio offered a unique space for these sensory explorations.

“There were nine interactive sessions during the workshop where we used the space to its full potential. For example, we lay on the floor to draw lines of care and the sound system delivered deep bass that passed through our bodies as we sampled a sensory art piece called Living Capsules. In the evening four sensory films were shown: Stories too big for a case file; Brixton/Brickstone; Unlocking Touch; and In the name of Wild.
