Mariana Mazzucato delivers keynote speech to major European public banks

IIPP Director Mariana Mazzucato delivers a keynote speech at the Luxembourg headquarters of the European Investment Bank.
This week Professor Mariana Mazzucato delivered a keynote speech to leaders of Europe鈥檚 major public banks at the Luxembourg headquarters of the European Investment Bank.听
In her speech Professor Mazzucato outlined how a 鈥榤ission-oriented鈥 approach ensures that public banks do not end up supporting 鈥榖usiness as usual鈥, but instead focus on driving transformative change 鈥撯 such as that which is required to achieve the Paris Agreement targets. The agreement sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2掳C听and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5掳C.
In the audience were the leaders of the European Investment Bank (European Union), KfW (Germany), Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (Poland), Groupe Caisse des D茅p么ts (France), Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (Italy) and Instituto de Cr茅dito Oficial (Spain).

Laurie Macfarlane, IIPP Head of Patient Finance, said: "Around the world policymakers are increasingly recognising the key role that public banks can play in tackling the key challenges of the twenty-first century. In the coming months we will be bringing together public banks and other public financial institutions to share lessons and opportunities, and to collaboratively develop a mission-oriented approach to public finance.鈥
