Who will win the Sinesio Alves Junior Prize at GISRUK 2013?

11 March 2013

Sinesio Alves Junior and the GISRUK 2013 Award

CASA is looking forward to reading the GISRUK 2013 papers so we can select a winner for our 'Best Paper in Spatial Analysis' award in memory of our much missed friend and colleague Sinesio Alves Junior.聽 The beautiful glass globe engraved award comes complete with a 拢100 Amazon gift voucher and has been presented at GISRUK for the past 3 years.

Junior, as he was affectionately known, joined CASA as a PhD researcher in 2001 and soon joined the staff team beginning work on various CASA projects such as the ESRC NeXSuS project led by Peter Allen from Cranfield.聽 He later assisted the whole department with his technical expertise as our systems administrator and was returning to Brazil to take a job at INPE when he was unexpectedly diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Junior made a big impact on everyone he met due to his friendly and cheerful nature.聽 He had a great sense of humour and was always smiling and we miss him very much.聽 It's our great pleasure to present this award for the fourth year running and we look forward to selecting the winning paper soon.

Previous award winners are:

: Suzanne Mavoa from the Melbourne School of Population Health, The University of Melbourne, for her paper (with Melody Oliver, Nicola Tavae and Karen Witten) 鈥淯sing GIS to integrate children鈥檚 walking interview data and objectively physical activity data鈥.
