Abstract
This event will be a conversation on drawing stories. Whether with people, animals, mythical creatures or other figures, The Singh Twins create worlds of spatial wonder and magical possibilities. Their images, whether paintings, collages or drawings,听use architectural conventions, such as the plan or the elevation, in imaginative and witty ways.听
They will discuss how they draw and build their visual stories鈥痶ogether; their creative process; and how they came to be who they are. This conversation will also touch on wider questions, such as: how can鈥痑rchitecture students鈥痩earn from an artistic drawing practice? What is the artist鈥檚 equivalent of 鈥榮ite鈥�, 鈥榩rogramme鈥�, or 鈥榤ateriality鈥�? Architectural drawings are usually used to communicate experiences or they are translated into buildings. How does an artist imagine the future life of their drawing?鈥��
Speaker biography
The Singh Twins are multi-award winning contemporary British artists with an international reputation, whose contribution to art has been recognised at the highest level. In 2010 they were made Honorary Citizens of Liverpool and in 2011 were awarded MBEs from HRH Queen Elizabeth II. They have Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Chester and Liverpool.
Their work, which explores hidden colonial histories and challenges Eurocentric perceptions of heritage and identity in art and society, was cited by Sir Simon Schama in his BBC documentary series 鈥�The Face of Britain鈥�, as representing the artistic face of modern Britain. Major exhibitions include solos at London's National Portrait Gallery and Delhi's National Gallery of Modern Art.
Their most recent exhibition ('Slaves of Fashion: New Works by The Singh Twins鈥�) attracted over 105,000 visitors at its launch venue (Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery) alone and received significant media interest. The Twins were subsequently commissioned by Royal Collection Trust to create new work, exhibited at The Queen鈥檚 Gallery, Buckingham Palace.听
